Face of the Day: 7.23

Today’s face is the trivial guy at The Sycamore in San Francisco.

Faces

Back in 1989 Wendy and I left Boston and drove across the country to San Francisco. We rented a big truck and had a ball stopping here and there along the way. When we got to San Francisco and were driving down Mission Street, we wondered what life would be like and thought about what we’d left behind. When we turned onto Sycamore Street and found a place to park we were greeted by a syringe on the steps of the building we’d be living in with our friends Jess and Bill.

It might not have been an auspicious start but it was the beginning of on of the most wonderful times in our life together. We stayed in SF from 89 to 95 and so much happened in those years. Some really great and some very hard. Such is life.

Every now and then I go to SF on business and in May of 2012 I found myself back in the Mission for dinner with a client. When dinner was over I went for a drink with one of my clients. Earlier that day I’d walked around the neighborhood and had stopped in at The Sycamore for a beer, so suggested we go there.

When we got to the bar it was trivia night and the fellow above was the host. We stuck around and played a bit (I’m pretty good at trivia) and when the night was over I talked with him for a while and got his picture. It was fun.

Walking past my old apartment (where we’d lived for only a few weeks before moving to Church Street) and back to my hotel I wondered what life would be like if we’d never left back in 95. I miss those times. Less for the time and place though than for that time in my life with Wendy. I can’t say I regret moving back to Boston. The life we have here is pretty good too.

Daily Dozen – Smirking Men

How do you define a smirk? I’m going with slightly crooked close-mouthed smiles. I had a bunch of them with varying degrees of crookedness. Hope you dig them.

Daily Dozen – Men in Bars

One of the easiest places to photograph strangers is in bars. There are a few reasons for this: first, people may have had a couple of drinks and are more relaxed; second, people are usually there with friends which makes them more comfortable and third, it’s usually a familiar place. When I started I shot almost exclusively in bars but eventually wanted to move beyond shooting in the dark. I still do it and always enjoy myself but am happy to have broadened things a bit. Today’s set features men in bars. Tomorrow, unless something else pops into my head, I will do women.

Daily Dozen – Fun Faced Fellows

I was out today and ran really late in terms of putting today’s set together. A lot of people offered to help come up with the theme for the day but almost everything they suggested was something I’ve done in the past. It’s tough. I decided to look at men with fun faces and to limit myself to the more recent set of 1000faces. I hope you’ll enjoy these 12 men who look like they’re having fun.

Daily Dozen – Women Who Dole Out Drinks

Most of the women in this set are bartenders but there are a couple who are waitresses at bars. My wife and I go to Legal Seafood pretty regularly and one of the bartenders is a big reason why. It’s funny but there’s no picture of her in this set. Maybe we’ll stop by tonight and I’ll see if I can’t get one. If I do many I’ll add it to this set, but in the meantime, enjoy!

Daily Dozen – Men with Sculpted Facial Hair

Maybe that’s not the right term for this set? I’ve done big beards, scruffy beards, mustaches and sideburns but today I was looking at a face with a carefully quaffed beardish thing going on. This set is about guys who treat their faces as hirsute canvases, shaving and shaping their hair into a shape and pattern that’s just right. I’ve tried not to include too many men that have only one facial hair element (a nifty mustache for example) but instead wanted at least a couple of things going on. There are – as always – exceptions. Enjoy!
