Face of the Day – 8.7

Missed yesterday. Busy busy day. Such is life.

Today’s face is a man in the Flatiron District in New York.

Face

I seem to go to New York at least once a month for business. It’s a treat for me since I love the city. Most of the time I’m up in the Flatiron District. For a while I was staying in a really cheap hotel in the neighborhood. No elevator, shared bathrooms, it was kind of beat after a while. The area is fun though and there are plenty of places to walk around and things to check out.

A couple of years ago I was out taking pictures, stopping people on the street. The man above was one of them. What’s curious about him is that he didn’t look at the camera. Sometimes people will ask me what I want them to do and I tell them to do nothing, just be themselves.

This guy was working on building out a restaurant and was sitting outside taking a break. I asked for his picture and he was fine with it. He got up and gazed off into the distance.

Daily Dozen – Women Wearing Pearls

Don’t know what’s behind today’s set. I think it was just opening my photo stream and seeing a picture of a woman wearing pearls. I can’t vouch for all of the pearls in these photographs being real, but it’s the thought that counts.

Daily Dozen – Smirking Men

How do you define a smirk? I’m going with slightly crooked close-mouthed smiles. I had a bunch of them with varying degrees of crookedness. Hope you dig them.

Daily Dozen – Women in Bars

This may be a first. Yesterday I did men in bars and said I’d do women’s today and here it is! The first photo is from Austin, TX. It was the first night I went out and photographed strangers. It hadn’t been my thing before that and if people hadn’t responded well to me asking I probably wouldn’t have continued. I’m glad people were – and continue to be – open minded.

Daily Dozen – Men in Bars

One of the easiest places to photograph strangers is in bars. There are a few reasons for this: first, people may have had a couple of drinks and are more relaxed; second, people are usually there with friends which makes them more comfortable and third, it’s usually a familiar place. When I started I shot almost exclusively in bars but eventually wanted to move beyond shooting in the dark. I still do it and always enjoy myself but am happy to have broadened things a bit. Today’s set features men in bars. Tomorrow, unless something else pops into my head, I will do women.

Daily Dozen – Dudes with Dimples

Almost a year ago I did a set of women with dimples and decided to revisit the theme today but featuring men. As with freckles, there seem to be a lot more women with dimples than men. I suppose it has to do with the structure of people’s faces. It took some time for me to round up twelve images but ultimately I was successful! I hope you’ll enjoy them.

Daily Dozen – People in, on and around cars

Today I got into a car accident. Don’t worry, I’m fine; but my car (which looks OK) is going to need some work. The crash meant that I ran really late today and didn’t have a chance to do the Daily Dozen first thing this morning. Now that I’m sitting down to do it, people and cars seemed to be a natural set. Here are a few photos of people in and around vehicles – and one photo of a car with a face. Enjoy!

Daily Dozen – Armed Women

On Saturday I went out walking around Boston with some friends. One of the shots I got was a nice looking guy wearing a green tanktop. This morning I thought I’d use it as part of a set of men wearing tank-tops, what with it be so hot out and all. As I went though my photos though I found I didn’t have many shots. What I did find though were lots of women in tank tops, or spagetti straps, halters, etc. As a result, I’ve put together a set of women baring their arms. It seems women are much more likely to bare their arms and shoulders than men. Enjoy!

Daily Dozen – Men I’ve Worked with Over the Years

The other day I did a set of women I worked with, today I decided to turn things around and look at some of the men I’ve worked with over the years. As I mentioned in the other set, my work has meant most of my colleagues have been men and my interest in photographing faces is a fairly new phenomenon so the pool of images available to me is limited. That said, I was easily able to find 12 photographs. As I think about it, I do have a history of photography faces that predates this project. Digging up and scanning some of those photos might be a project for some weekend this summer. In any case, here are 12 men I’ve worked with over the years.
