Face of the day – 8.2

Today’s face is my barber, Italo DeMasi.

Face - Barber

I think there are three barber shops in Natick Center, two at least. When we first moved to town 15 years ago I went to Sportsman’s. It was a good place, three or four chairs, very mellow. Pennants hung from the ceiling, along walls covered with photos and clippings. Then the owner retired and the guy who cut my hair died. Apparently the shop was already in the process of being sold and it was changing, getting cleaned up and took on a different look and feel. It was time for me to move on.

At the time I was working in Kendall Square and found that one of my old barbers was working there so my problem was solved. But things get busy during the day and it can be hard sometimes to find the time. So I went when I could but still needed a place near home.

Bruno’s is where I went. The shop has been open since 1959. When I started going, Bruno was still working there. He’s since retired, but his brother Italo runs things now. Italo is my next door neighbor’s uncle, plays the accordion and clarinet and is a great booster for the town. Even if I don’t sit in his chair, it’s always good to catch up.

Daily Dozen – Back to School

August is a tough month. It certainly is as far as posting photos goes. Every year I see a big dip in my photographic productivity in August. Part of it is that I’m on vacation and even though I take pictures I don’t do a great job of processing and posting them. That trend continued in 2012. But summer is over and it’s time for everyone to buckle down and get serious again. That’s why today’s theme is back to school.

As a rule, I don’t photograph kids (I do, but I don’t post them any where) so it’s harder to say who’s a student. Thankfully, since I talk a bit with everyone whose picture I take, I know that all the faces in today’s set are students (or at least were when I took their photograph). Obviously none of them are on their way to middle school – over even high school. These students are mostly in grad school but it still counts!

Daily Dozen – Men in Uniforms, Costumes or Other Fancy Attire

I was going to do a set of men who are big fans of Harry Potter but realized I don’t really have enough photos to sustain it. Instead, branching off that, I decided to do a set of images of men dressed in unusual ways. There are some fellows in costumes, some in uniforms, a few just bedecked with some small element that says, “hey, look, I’m having fun!”

Daily Dozen – Goin’ to the Chapel

Every day there are between four and five thousand weddings in the United States. I’ve seen number saying more than six thousand in some places. Tomorrow my friend Abby is getting married. Originally today’s set was going to feature women with long wavy hair (which I’ll do on Monday I guess) but as I tagged photos I came across Abby’s photos a few times and thought, “oh yeah, she’s getting married tomorrow, I’ll do a set!” And so that’s what I did.

I met Abby almost exactly four years ago (July 30, 2008 – I know because I took her picture). Her then roommate Karyn (maybe they weren’t roommates at the time, probably not actually) became one of my truest pals so I’ve seen Abby here and there frequently over the past few years. Less, I guess since Karyn moved to Nebraska. Anyhow, like I was saying, lots of people get married and now it’s Abby’s turn. Fred’s the guy she’s marrying and he’s cool too. Here’s wishing them good fortune and a long and happy life together!

Daily Dozen – Women in Stripes

This was a surprisingly hard set to put together. It seems that many women don’t wear striped clothing. I looked hard though and was able to find a number to choose from. A few might be a stretch but what can you do?

Daily Dozen – Armed Women

On Saturday I went out walking around Boston with some friends. One of the shots I got was a nice looking guy wearing a green tanktop. This morning I thought I’d use it as part of a set of men wearing tank-tops, what with it be so hot out and all. As I went though my photos though I found I didn’t have many shots. What I did find though were lots of women in tank tops, or spagetti straps, halters, etc. As a result, I’ve put together a set of women baring their arms. It seems women are much more likely to bare their arms and shoulders than men. Enjoy!

Daily Dozen – People I’ve known for more than 20 years

I was listening to Bob Wills this morning on my way in to work. The first time I heard him was in 1989 and boy was that music fun. Wendy and I drove cross country that summer to move from Boston to San Francisco and we must have listened to the tape of his 24 greatest hits a hundred times. That was just about 23 years ago now. It seems much more recent than that. While I was thinking about that trip I thought of the friends who saw us off and the friends who welcomed us to California. That got me thinking about friends in general and made me wonder how many friends from 20 or more years ago I might have photographs of. The search led to this set. I’ve gone with people I’m not related to by blood or marriage. At some point I’ll do a family set. Not today though.
