Face of the Day – 8.29

Today’s face is Tony Tester.

Face - man with two-tone face

It’s kind of a continuation of yesterday’s kinky hair theme I guess. Tony, his brother Chuck and this guy Phil are Tester, a really fun, loud and raucous band. I first saw them at a bar in Framingham and see them out there from time to time. Since I’m pretty pressed for time today I don’t have much to say.

I will say that what I like about this picture is the half-face thing going on and the colors.

Face of the Day – 7.17

Today’s face is perhaps a cautionary tale. It is for me at least. A lot of the early photographs in my 1000faces project were taken at a bar near my home. I became a regular and would go at least once a week, usually on Wednesday nights. Over time I became a fixture and photographed a lot of people and became good friends with many of them. I thought nothing of approaching anyone and asking for their picture and most of the time people were fine with it. Sometimes not so much (though I never got hit).

This guy, whose name escapes me, was obviously fine with it. Whenever I photograph someone – unless they are on stage – I introduce myself and ask if it’s OK to take their picture. Some people have suggested it would be better/easier to hang back and take photographs on the sly. It’s not what I do though.

In fact, to help legitimize 1000faces I had little Moo cards made. For a lot of people it seemed to transform me from a stranger with a camera into someone working on an art project. So far, so good. Unfortunately – and this is the cautionary part of the story – my cards originally had my cell number on them.

If you look at my project you’ll find I’ve photographed several thousand people at this point. Giving several thousand strangers your phone number isn’t a good idea. One day I was at work (I do PR and was working at Weber Shandwick at the time) and my phone rang. The friendly (but unfamiliar) voice on the phone started talking, saying they were glad they caught me and on and on.

I had no idea who it was. At first I wasn’t sure if it was a man or a woman. I had no context for the call and the person wasn’t helping. Eventually I figured out it was someone I’d photographed and that it was today’s face. He was a strange duck and didn’t seem to think there was anything odd about calling to share his troubles with me early one morning.

As soon as we hung up I went online and order new cards – without my number.

Daily Dozen – Men in Uniforms, Costumes or Other Fancy Attire

I was going to do a set of men who are big fans of Harry Potter but realized I don’t really have enough photos to sustain it. Instead, branching off that, I decided to do a set of images of men dressed in unusual ways. There are some fellows in costumes, some in uniforms, a few just bedecked with some small element that says, “hey, look, I’m having fun!”

Daily Dozen – Nice Choppers!

I just got my teeth cleaned and thought I’d do a set of people with great teeth. Here they are! Hope you’re teeth are doing great today.

Daily Dozen – Smirking Men

How do you define a smirk? I’m going with slightly crooked close-mouthed smiles. I had a bunch of them with varying degrees of crookedness. Hope you dig them.

Daily Dozen – Long and Dark May it Wave

This is the set I’d planned to do last Friday – women with long dark wavy hair. It’s hard to make a distinction between wavy and curly so I apologize if it’s a mixed bag but I try.

Daily Dozen – Goin’ to the Chapel

Every day there are between four and five thousand weddings in the United States. I’ve seen number saying more than six thousand in some places. Tomorrow my friend Abby is getting married. Originally today’s set was going to feature women with long wavy hair (which I’ll do on Monday I guess) but as I tagged photos I came across Abby’s photos a few times and thought, “oh yeah, she’s getting married tomorrow, I’ll do a set!” And so that’s what I did.

I met Abby almost exactly four years ago (July 30, 2008 – I know because I took her picture). Her then roommate Karyn (maybe they weren’t roommates at the time, probably not actually) became one of my truest pals so I’ve seen Abby here and there frequently over the past few years. Less, I guess since Karyn moved to Nebraska. Anyhow, like I was saying, lots of people get married and now it’s Abby’s turn. Fred’s the guy she’s marrying and he’s cool too. Here’s wishing them good fortune and a long and happy life together!
