Obviously I photograph a lot of people. Often I’m asked how I want them to look at the camera. I always say to look natural, to be themselves. For most people this means to smile, for others it means look tough and for some it means be silly. The strangest response though is no response. People who show no expression at all. Sometimes people can have a neutral expression on their face but still show something with their eyes. In the case of the 12 men in this set there’s nothing. Just a blank. In reality all of these men are as animated as anyone but their response to the camera is to shift into neutral. It’s curious.
